CHICAGO — The Chicago Sky have a lot of potential, and they are working hard to start the 2024 WNBA season strong. Teresa Weatherspoon talked about the importance of having a fully healthy team before Tuesday night’s game against the Storm. Kamilla Cardoso is getting ready to play in her first regular season game after suffering an injury setback.
On May 3, Kamilla Cardoso played in her first Sky preseason game against the Minnesota Lynx. The 6’7″ big pulled down four rebounds and scored six points. She missed over a month due to a shoulder injury, which limited her to just 13 minutes of play. Cardoso stated that she intended to return on June 1st, so supporters might catch her playing on Saturday against the Indiana Fever or soon after. Teresa Weatherspoon expressed her excitement at Cardoso’s comeback and praised the rookie’s upbeat attitude.
“We’re super excited to have her on the court and the smiles she’s having right now. She puts a big smile on our face just because she’s out there and she’s pain free. And that’s the most important thing,” Weatherspoon said before Tuesday night’s Storm game.
Kamilla Cardoso arrived in Chicago as the third overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft. Her stout two-way interior presence will significantly boost the Sky. Cardoso is a collegiate national champion and wants to help Chicago climb the Eastern Conference. Yet, the rookie is not the only one who is healthy and making an impact.
Diamond DeShields was sidelined during the 2023 season from a serious knee injury. Before that, she battled a lengthy recovery period from a spinal tumor and nerve damage that followed its removal. But now, she is healthy and helping Chicago on both sides of the floor. Weatherspoon found significant meaning in DeShields’ journey and looked ahead to great things from her.
She works hard and has faith in her education. She has a compelling story that deserves to be heard because she is aware of her past experiences. We know we’re keeping her healthy because she says she’s pain-free, according to Weatherspoon. DeShields is free to play with no pain. You are going to get something [special] when you get those kinds of athletes.”
