Los Angeles (AP) — Miley Cyrus won her first-ever Grammy for the song “Flowers,” for which she received the best pop solo performance award from Mariah Carey.

Grammy Awards 2024 LIVE Updates: Miley Cyrus wins the Best Pop Solo Performance award for her song "Flowers"

Because of the intense rain that is battering Los Angeles, Cyrus claimed she nearly missed the start of the event. Nevertheless, she expressed gratitude that she didn’t miss the opportunity to perform onstage alongside Carey. Cyrus has received eight nominations in the past.

Following that, Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman sang “Fast Car.” Combs’ rendition of the Chapman classic had been playing on country radio for a while and won him song of the year at the 2023 CMAs. For the song, Chapman was awarded best pop vocal performance, female in 1989.

With a high-octane medley, Dua Lipa opened the event. She teased her upcoming track “Training Season,” followed by her most recent single “Houdini,” and ended with her disco-pop classic “Dance the Night.”

Meryl Streep gave four-time Grammy host and two-time nominee Trevor Noah a kiss on the cheek as he welcomed the enthusiastic audience from the stage at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. He jokingly predicted that the Grammys will win as much as the Oscars.

Viewers should anticipate an emphasis on the female nominees as the evening goes on, as women outnumber men in the major categories. With nine nominations, SZA is in the lead, closely followed by Phoebe Bridgers and Victoria Monét with seven each. Boygenius, a band from Bridgers, has six.

SZA, Travis Scott, Billy Joel, Eilish, Rodrigo, Burna Boy, and Joni Mitchell made their Grammys debuts, among others.

At the Grammy Awards, Bridgers jumped out to an early lead, winning four trophies before the main show began. She and her boygenius colleagues also brought an electrifying enthusiasm to the Premiere Ceremony.

The first prize, for best pop duo/group performance—which went to SZA and Bridgers for “Ghost in the Machine”—was given to her by songwriter Justin Tranter on Sunday.

She didn’t play on stage for that, but instead she walked straight to the top with her band Boygenius, which consisted of her, Lucy Dacus, and Julian Baker. All three of them looked alike in white suits, and they won their first Grammy together for best rock performance with “Not Strong Enough.”

Dacus remarked, “Oh my God, I want to throw up,” during their acceptance speech. This is not true. I’m grateful. “Music was my lifeline,” Baker exclaimed. “Anybody can form a band.” They returned to the stage for the best rock song and best alternative music album a short while later.

In a highly competitive competition, where she faced off against Victoria Monét’s “How Does It Make You Feel” and SZA’s “Kill Bill,” newcomer Coco Jones won best R&B performance for her song “ICU.” SZA won her second prize of the evening for “S.O.S.”, the best progressive R&B album.

For the third consecutive year, Jack Antonoff won producer of the year, non-classical, tying Babyface as the only other producer to do so in a row. In his winning speech, he stated, “You need the door kicked open for you.” “Taylor Swift opened that (expletive) door for me,” the speaker said, alluding to their collaboration.

Shortly thereafter, Kylie Minogue won the first of three new categories in 2024—best pop dance recording.
