LeBron James Says He Wants to Play With Steph Curry - Inside the Warriors

The Splash Brothers are no longer, since Klay Thompson signed with Dallas and he had one parting request for Steph Curry, according to The Athletic’s Anthony Slater.

“It’s been a layered five-year path to this divorce, splintering last season, sprouting earlier and finalizing in the last couple weeks, where —among the conversations Thompson had, league sources said — was a request of Stephen Curry not to exert his significant organizational influence and up the temperature with management to ensure Thompson’s return,” Slater said. “Curry’s measured voice, even if it altered the outcome, wouldn’t change the genuineness of Joe Lacob and the front office’s true desire to have Thompson back.”

It seemed that Klay wanted the front office to do right by him, without his longtime teammate’s influence.

However, Golden State made it clear where they stood after some “cold” negotiations between Klay and the team owner Joe Lacob, both parties geared up to part ways.

The Lakers and the Mavericks were two of the frontrunners to land Thompson and ultimately he chose Dallas, for a number of reasons.

It’s no secret that the Warriors best player, Steph, has an enormous amount of pull at the franchise.

Curry and Draymond Green both were apparently on board with signing Paul George before he opted out of his Clippers contract and signed with Philly.

Steph shared a heartfelt message about Klay on his social media after the news of him leaving Golden State dropped.

“Gonna miss you @KlayThompson. Even though we won’t finish the journey together, what we did will never be done again. Couldn’t have imagined a better run with you and @Money23Green. Changed the whole Bay Area. Changed the way the game is played. Killa Klay at the center of it all. Thank you for everything bro. Go enjoy playing basketball and doing what you do. Splash Bros 4 life my guy.”

The Thompson family have a long association with the Lakers and Klay Thompson had the opportunity to sign with the franchise, yet he chose the Mavericks.

Klay’s dad, Mychal Thompson, is a two-time NBA champion with the Showtime Lakers and is currently the team’s radio color commentator.

So he thought the most logical choice for Klay was a move to LA.

“He grew up a Laker fan. He grew up idolizing Kobe Bryant like most players his age, most kids his age,” Mychal said on Sirius XM NBA Radio. “So I just thought it seemed to be the perfect fit for him to finally come back home, ‘cause we always talked about him playing for the Lakers if he was not a Golden State Warrior, where else would he want to play?”

Thompson ended his historic 13-season run with Golden State and agreed to a three-year, $50 million deal with the Mavericks on Monday. Much to his dad’s dismay.

“I mean, obviously, it’s Klay’s decision, it’s his life, he’s a grown man, 34 years of age,” Thompson said. “Just like we were 34 one time and our fathers used to give us advice and, you know, we would choose our own path. And that’s fine, that’s what life is supposed to be about.
